Settling In

Well, it's been a couple of weeks now that we have been off the boat and living in our tiny apartment. Surprisingly, we're very OK with it! I guess it was time.

We have been rediscovering downtown Cortland, which really hasn't changed a whole lot since I was a student here. Same bars, different names. We can (and do) walk downtown & to the Hollywood restaurant! Even the laundromat (yeah, I know, pain in the butt) we use has been in the same place (probably with the same machines) for as long as I can remember.

We have become card-carrying members of the Cortland Free Library, and have joined a gym. The gym is in a sports facility (that's new) that has an indoor soccer field and an ice rink for hockey and public skating- so there's a lot of activity in the place- which is nice.

We thought we would miss the train whistle as it ran up along the lake- but there is a train that goes through Cortland and we can hear its whistle here in the apartment. There are churchbells too on the hour like we used to hear in Groton, so we are doing quite well.

Tom is very busy trying to finish off the renovations to the rental property out back. It is amazing how much better that house looks now. He has done a super, super job! Hopefully the new tenants will appreciate it!

I have been running errands on my bike- I went today to buy a few groceries and then I went to the hardware store for Tom. We are excited that we can actually go places without using a car!

We're looking forward to more good things this fall.

A new "roost"

The image below doesn't really show all the mess that confronted us when we left the boat. You may recall that we (I mean Tom & Ian) just stashed our house stuff in the apartment in July, and we spent all of our time on the boat.

Now that we've sold the boat, we had to create some order in the apartment.

Ta Da!!! Not too bad, actually, and it's lots bigger than the boat!

It's all over now

End of summer, and end of an era. We sold the boat!

Tonight is our last night at the lake, and this will be our next to last entry on this blog.

Our very last entry will direct you to our new blog, which we haven't yet set up or named. We were considering "Tom & Cyndy's Excellent European Adventure" or "All Who Wander Are Not Lost". Stay tuned!

The lost is found

Some time ago this chair disappeared from our lawn at the marina. We always assumed it had blown away in a storm, but we were not able to find it. The longer the chair was gone, the more stories were told about its disappearance! The final version was that "canoe people" had paddled into the marina in the middle of the night and had stolen it.

Well, a couple of days ago Tom went out on the dock and spotted it on the bottom in the empty slip. It seems that it had blown under our neighbor's boat and was hidden in the seaweed all this time.

That isn't dirt on the chair, or even seaweed - it is zebra mussels. See the next photo for a close up.

Yuck!
